Near the end of 2010, former Gurnee and Lake Villa resident Chris Hradisky weighed barely 80 pounds and was waiting to die. With the help of his sister, the Lake County Center for Independent Living and a state program designed to save money by getting people with disabilities to live in their homes, the 49-year-old man is living in a Waukegan apartment with help far cheaper than a nursing home. It was inside a 30,000-square-foot hangar at DuPage Airport filled with 1,000 people where two 86-year-old World War II veterans who grew up in the same Chicago neighborhood met Saturday for the first time. An Honor Flight Chicago fundraiser organized by the DuPage Veterans Foundation brought together Jim Cesareo of Elburn and Pat Angelo of Flossmoor, who served on sister ships during their time in the Navy. A North Chicago man on parole after serving 20 years in prison for murder was arrested late Saturday on charges he was found with loaded a handgun and crack cocaine during a traffic stop in Gurnee, Lake County Sheriff's police said Sunday. Gordon Johnson, 44, is being held on $40,000 bond on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Two dogs die in Hoffman Estates fire</h3>
Dennis Matus lost his two dogs and the Hoffman Estates home he's lived in for 30 years in a fire Friday night in the 900 block of Basswood Street Matus said he had gone to play hockey around 7 p.m. and returned to find his house completely burned around 9:45 p.m. Firefighters told him that the blaze may have started in the kitchen. The fire went through the roof in the rear of the house and almost everything is a complete loss. Full story.

A child was struck by a vehicle on Rand Road near Dundee Road Sunday afternoon, according to police. Police said the child was struck south of Dundee Road at about 3:30 p.m. The roadway was shut down between Dundee Road and Winslowe Drive as police investigated. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Wood Dale homeowners surprised by tree falling onto roof</h3>
It sounded like a bomb. That's how Wood Dale resident Aldona Gallo described the sound of a tree falling on her neighbor's house and garage Saturday in the 100 block of North Cedar Street. The house and garage belong to Dan and Kim Prochaska, who weren't home when their neighbors in the 200 block of Montrose Avenue cut down one of three trees after being ordered to so by Wood Dale officials, Alderman Joe Kolz said.
