Person in custody after man murdered in Schaumburg

Schaumburg police continue to investigate the Saturday night murder of a 31-year-old man who was found with multiple stab wounds in an apartment unit. One person was in custody last night, but police said no charges had been filed. James A. Gosnell, whose last known residence was in Poplar Grove, died from multiple stab wounds, according to an autopsy. Full story.

Railroad buffs on private CTA train that derailed

A group of railroad enthusiasts who were mostly members of the McHenry County-based Illinois Railway Museum were aboard the CTA train that derailed in Chicago late Sunday morning. The group of about 40 riders had chartered older-model cars to take them on a private ride around the city as part of a fundraising effort for the museum. Nobody was injured when the train derailed, but passengers had to walk along the tracks to the nearest station, while trains systemwide experienced long delays. Full story.

Rolling Meadows nursing home residents rally against state cuts

Nursing home residents and their families rallied against a proposal to eliminate $2.7 billion from Medicaid at the ManorCare nursing home in Rolling Meadows yesterday. Residents say the cuts would lessen their experience at the home. “This is a place I can be and feel like I’m part of something,” said Karin Chalifoux, a 43-year-old resident who suffered from multiple sclerosis. “The people here are wonderful.” Residents took photos at the event and plan on delivering them to Gov. Pat Quinn to put a face on the struggle. Full story.

Fire damages Hawthorn Woods home

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a blaze that damaged a Hawthorn Woods house Sunday morning. The blaze brought crews from more than a dozen area departments to the scene on the 26200 block of Fairfield Road at about 10:40 a.m. There were no reported injuries. Full story.

Algonquin residents fight construction that would cut down 70 trees

Residents of an Algonquin subdivision are fighting against a plan to widen roadways because the plan would chop down 70 trees. Village officials said the need to widen the roads in the Indian Grove subdivision is to meet village standards and to replace a faulty water main and add sewers. The $2.5 million project was slated to begin accepting bids in mid-May. Officials admit the trees that would be replaced would not be of the same caliber, many of them are oaks and sycamores. Kaneland to vote on extended-day kindergarten

Kaneland District 302 is considering testing an extended-day kindergarten starting next year, but would cost $250 per month, but some students would be eligible for lower tuition. The school board tonight will vote on the program, which would be offered at all four elementary schools in the district. If the number of students signed up exceeds the maximum under the proposal, the district would conduct a lottery to see who gets those spots. Full story.

Rain is expected, but warmer weather will greet people in the Chicago area this morning. It’s 50 degrees now, but temperatures will climb to 67 degrees before the end of the day. However, a thunderstorm will hit in the midmorning hours, then again overnight. In-between it’ll be mostly cloudy. Full story.

Traffic

Accidents are plentiful this morning, and people should be prepared for long delays. All lanes are blocked on Butterfield Road between Eola Road and Route 59 near Warrenville due to a bad crash, The right shoulder is blocked on I-90 near Route 31 in Elgin due to another crash, while two left lanes are blocked on I-290 at the Tri-state due to a crash. Motorists should also avoid Mill Road at I-290 in Addison where bridge work will slow things down until late June. Full story.

Cubs, Sox win Sunday afternoon

Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza threw seven shutout innings of one hit baseball to help the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies byy a score of 5-1, while White Sox starter Gavin Floyd didn’t give up a hit until the 7th inning, helping the Sox down the Boston Red Sox by a final of 4-1.
