Police: Man murdered in Schaumburg apartment

Schaumburg police are investigating the murder of a 31-year-old man who officers found suffering from multiple stab wounds late Saturday night at a village apartment complex.

One person remained in custody Sunday afternoon, but police said no charges had been filed.

An autopsy on James A. Gosnell, whose last known residence was in Poplar Grove, determined the cause of death to be homicide due to multiple stab wounds, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police said the Schaumburg Fire Department was dispatched at 10:12 p.m. Saturday to the apartment in the 1800 block of Georgia Court for a report of a person needing medical assistance. After emergency dispatchers learned the person may have been stabbed, police responded to the scene and found the victim seriously injured.

The man was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., police said.

Another adult located inside the apartment, as well as two others found nearby, were taken to the Schaumburg police station for further investigation, police said. The stabbing does not appear to be random, as initial indications are the deceased and the other person within the apartment may have been acquainted, police added.

Neighbors in the apartment complex on the southwest side of the village said they recalled hearing a commotion about 10:30 p.m. Saturday then saw numerous police and rescue vehicles outside.

“I was in my bedroom, and I just saw nothing but lights,” said neighbor Shannon Collins. “A fire truck and an ambulance were here. And I came out the back and I saw, like, 30 police cars, and (the police) all started running.”

She said she later saw officers putting a man in the back seat of a squad car.

Another neighbor, Ken Patrick, said a man was brought out in handcuffs.

“All he said was, ‘Is that guy gonna be all right?’ and they hauled him out of here pretty quick,” he said.

“It’s always quiet,” Patrick said of the neighborhood. “I have lived here for a year and a half, and I have never had anything like this happening.”

Police do not expect charges to be filed Sunday night, as detectives continue to aggressively investigate the case. They do not believe there should be any reason for safety concerns for members of the general public.

Schaumburg police are being assisted by the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) Forensics Unit and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
