Bears draft capsules

Round 1/19 - Shea McClellin, DE, 6-3, 260, Boise State

The Bears believe he provides the best chance to immediately upgrade a pass rush that was subpar last season. Teams that play a 3-4 defense projected him as a linebacker, and he played both positions extensively the past two seasons, when he had 16 1/2 sacks and 26 tackles for loss. Ran a 4.63 40, second fastest among DEs at the Combine. Team’s defensive MVP in 2011 and second-team All-America. Hard-working, football smart and technically sound. Plays with good pad level and excels at disengaging from blocks and quickly finding the football. Bench-pressed 225 just 19 times but possesses functional strength despite marginal size for DE. Should factor immediately as situational pass rusher.

Round 2/45 - Alshon Jeffery, WR, 6-3, 216, South Carolina

Bears traded up 5 spots to make sure they got the most productive receiver in school history. In just three years he totaled 3,042 receiving yards. Had huge sophomore season in 2010 (88 catches, 1,517 yards, 17.2-yard average, 9 touchdowns). Production plummeted last season (49-762-15.6-8), when team became more run-oriented. Great red-zone target had 23 touchdowns. Led team in receiving all 3 years, including as a true freshman, when he caught 46 passes for 763 yards (16.6-yard average) and 6 touchdowns. 40-times are marginal, mostly in the 4.55-4.60 range, but he excels at competing for jump balls and adjusting to the ball. Can out-physical, out-size and out-jump most defensive backs.

Round 3/79 – Brandon Hardin, S, 6-3, 220, Oregon State

Missed the 2011 season with a fractured shoulder that required season-ending surgery, although he returned to play in the East-West Shrine Game. Has been cleared medically by the Bears to participate in minicamp. Started 12 games at cornerback as a junior in 2010, but the Bears will play him at strong safety. Played in a CB rotation in 2009 and started three games. Bears had him at 4.44 in the 40 at his pro day, where he also repped 225 pounds 24 times. Gets high marks for physical, aggressive tackling.

Round 4/111 – Evan Rodriguez, TE, 6-1 ½, 244, Temple

An undersized, athletic pass-catching tight end had 35 receptions last season for 479 yards, averaging 13.7 yards per catch with 2 touchdowns. Started 28 games at Temple after transferring from West Virginia. As a junior caught 21 passes for 247 yards, averaging 11.8 yards with 2 touchdowns. Has had off-the-field issues. In ‘07, at West Virginia, after an alleged physical altercation with a female residence hall advisor, he had a felony assault charge reduced to misdemeanor disturbance and trespassing charges. After transferring to Temple, was arrested for disorderly conduct in April ‘09. Good speed (4.56 40-yard dash) and is a natural pass catcher with good body control and smooth movement skills to adjust to the ball in the air. Not a factor as an in-line blocker and is more of a finesse, H-back or move-TE type, who can hit a moving target as a blocker.

Round 6/184 – Isaiah Frey, CB, 5-10 ½, 188, Nevada

Had 5 interceptions and a national-best 21 pass breakups as a senior. Three-year starter. Does not play a physical game and has unrefined footwork. Has good closing speed but gives too much cushion in coverage. Solid 40-yard dash time (4.46) at pro day and tested well in all speed and agility events (4.04 20-yard shuttle, 6.90 three-cone). Did 18 reps at 225 on the bench. Also had a 9-foot-11 broad jump and a 32 ½-inch vertical.

Round 7/220 – Greg McCoy, CB-KR, 5-10, 181, TCU

Led the Mountain West and was sixth in the nation with a 30.6-yard kickoff-return average in 2011, when he had 94- and 99-yard returns for touchdowns. Started all 13 games at cornerback each of the last two seasons. Had 229 kickoff-return yards against Baylor last season on 6 attempts (38.2-yard average). Had 2 interceptions in each of the past 3 seasons and 7 for his career. Ran a 4.44 40 at his pro day.
