Baker hearing continued:

A hearing on a defense motion to bar statements Daniel Baker made regarding the April 1, 2010 murder of Marina Aksman of Vernon Hills was continued Friday to May 18 in Lake County circuit court. Baker, 23, is charged with first-degree murder of Aksman, 50, who was beaten to death in her home with a baseball bat. Police said Baker was upset with Aksman because she was trying to end his relationship with her daughter, Kristina. Baker and Kristina Aksman, who was never charged with a crime in connection with her mother’s death, fled in Marina Aksman’s car and were captured five days later in Montana. Waukegan Det. Charles Schletz, who interviewed Baker there as a member of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, testified Friday for about three hours regarding details of the interview sessions. Defense attorney Edward Genson contends Baker was under duress and should have had a lawyer present. Prosecutors say Baker understood what was happening and his statements were voluntary.
