Addison crash on Route 53 injures five

Four people with mental disabilities were among five people injured in a two-vehicle, head-on crash Friday afternoon near Route 53 and Mitchell Court in Addison Township, authorities said.

A van carrying the four people with disabilities collided with another vehicle about 3:20 p.m. near a strip mall that's under construction, but it's unclear so far how the crash occurred or which driver was at fault, authorities said.

The four people with disabilities were taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with relatively minor injuries, Addison Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Heinrich said.

The driver of the other vehicle had “more critical” injuries and was taken to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, Heinrich said.

The DuPage County Sheriff's office was working on reconstructing the crash to determine how it happened Friday afternoon.

All lanes of Route 53 between Army Trail Road and Fullerton Avenue were shut down more than two hours while the crash was cleaned up and the reconstruction process began, authorities said.
