Another Scholten finds Fame

For nearly 10 years, Conant girls volleyball coach Peggy Scholten has been a member of the Illinois Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

This Saturday, she no longer will be the only hall of famer in her household.

Peggy’s husband Steve is entering the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as an official.

Steve has been officiating varsity basketball games since 1981 after starting out in junior high action in the mid-1970s.

Steve met Peggy while he was a student Elk Grove High School, where he played basketball and baseball.

“Peggy went to Forest View and there was a group of us from Forest View and Elk Grove who would hang out after games,” Steve said. “I’m very proud of what Peggy has done. She has had a marvelous career at Conant (head coach for 35 seasons) and has done a lot of great things for people.”

Steve was at Peggy’s inductment ceremony in Addison in 2003.

Steve will be inducted in the 40th class of the IBCA Saturday at Illinois State, where he and his wife graduated.

“Something like this never crossed my mind,” said Scholten about the hall of fame honor. “I feel very blessed and happy to be part of high school sports. My wife and three kids have been wonderful about it and so understanding when I am out working on Friday and Saturday nights.”

Scholten worked three state tournaments, including the 2008 Class 4A state title between champion Richards and runner-up Zion-Benton. This season he officiated the Northern Illinois Class 3A supersectional between Peoria and Rockford East.

Scholten, who has worked 30 years for park districts and the last four as the executive director of the Arlington Heights Park District, still loves his side job.

“God willing, I will be there doing it again this season (for his 34th season as a certified IHSA official),” he said. “I still love it. It’s a passion of mine. I like being on the floor. To be honored for doing it is really special. I am very honored and humbled.”

Scholten’s longtime officiating partner, Peter King of Palatine, is also being inducted into the hall on Saturday.

“Peter and I have been partners since 1983,” Steve said. “I’ve probably worked 75 percent of my games with Peter.”

Daily Herald sports writer Marty Maciaszek will also be inducted in the IBCA Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Marty, a York High School and Bradley graduate, has covered a total of 12 boys basketball state tournaments, the first two with the Peoria Journal Star and the most recent 10 with the Daily Herald. A career highlight for Marty was covering Schaumburg’s 2000-01 championship over Thornwood for the Class AA crown.

Marty follows retired Daily Herald high school sports luminary Bob Frisk and current Fox Valley high school sports editor John Radtke into the IBCA Hall of Fame.

Others being inducted are Warren coach Chuck Ramsey, Mike Bailey of St. Patrick (a Mount Prospect resident), Todd Sutton of Neuqua Valley, retired Downers Grove South coach Paul Runyon, Naperville Central’s Andy Nussbaum, Downers Grove South’s Bryan Mullins, Bob Scarpino (Wheeling, Hersey, St. Edward), St. Viator’s Joe Majkowski and Hoffman Estates’ Bill Wandro.

National title for Lee

Senior Katie Lee (Buffalo Grove) was one the of the top defenders for Marquette’s club team when it won the national championship game over Delaware Blue Hens in Raleigh, N.C.

The Blue Hens built an 18-5 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first half but Marquette was able to close the gap to 22-16 by halftime. Lee made some key steals to help invite the comeback.

The experience of playing in a postseason tournament was hardly new for Lee, who was a member of the Buffalo Grove girls basketball team which took fourth place in the 2008 IHSA state finals.

And no one will forget Lee’s softball abilities, which included one of the all-time finest catches in the Mid-Suburban League history when she leaped over the center field fence to take away a home run from Elk Grove.

Lee has been selected to receive a 2012 Outstanding Student Leadership Award for her contribution to recreation, health and wellness, honoring her work with the MU Women’s Club Basketball.

She has served as president and organized their two teams (Gold and Blue) and the coaching staff for the past two years. Lee set up schedules, transportation/hotel logistics, and helped Marquette host tournaments and raise funds.

For the last two years, one of the teams was successful in earning a berth the national tournament.

Lee will graduate in May with a degree in athletic training but will continue her doctorate program in physical therapy.
