Bears’ tight ends could be busier this season
The Bears intend to throw the ball to their tight ends more often this season.
They couldn’t throw it to them much less than they did in 2011, when Bears tight ends caught just 25 passes for 256 yards.
The belief is that 6-foot-7, 267-pound Kellen Davis can be an effective receiver if given the opportunity, which the Bears haven’t given him in his first four seasons in the NFL.
The 2008 fifth-round pick from Michigan State has shown flashes, especially in the red zone.
He had only 18 catches last season but produced a team-best 5 touchdowns. He has 9 career TDs on just 28 receptions.
Matt Spaeth was brought in last season as an unrestricted free agent and was used almost exclusively as a blocker, but the 6-foot-7, 260-pounder is a big target underneath and as a safety valve.
Kyle Adams and Andre Smith were undrafted free agents last year. Adams played in nine games, mostly on special teams, while Smith spent half the season on the practice squad and the other half in the roster but inactive on game days.
