Million-dollar penny auctioned in Schaumburg

One of the first coins ever struck at the United States Mint, an experimental 1792-dated copper cent with a small silver plug at its center, is expected to sell for more than $1 million at a public auction in Schaumburg on Thursday, April 19. The auction is occurring in conjunction with a coin collectors convention running from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Schaumburg Renaissance Convention Center at 1551 N. Thoreau Drive. The portrait on the coin’s front is a symbolic representation of “Miss Liberty,” with the inscription “Liberty Parent of Science & Industry.” The back of the coin has a wreath and the words “United States of America One Cent” and the fraction 1/100.
