Bears might use late pick on QB
Having signed veteran Jason Campbell, an experienced starter in the NFL, as Jay Cutler’s backup, and with veteran Josh McCown re-signing, the Bears don’t have a pressing need at quarterback.
Before last season’s thumb injury knocked him out of the final six games of the season, Cutler had missed just one NFL game in five years because of injury. The assumption is that he will be better protected this season than in the past two, when the leaky O-line allowed 105 sacks.
However, the Bears may want to start developing a young quarterback. Campbell is signed for just one year, and he will likely be looking to move on next year in search of a starting job. In addition, McCown will be 33 before training camp begins.
So the Bears might be looking for a project in the late rounds of the NFL draft that they could develop on the practice squad, especially since little is known about last year’s fifth-round pick Nathan Enderle. He was a Mike Martz favorite, but with “Mad Mike” no longer around, the Bears could consider a more athletic alternative.
