Vernon Hills gives Grayslake North first defeat

Vernon Hills’ girls soccer team cooled off Grayslake North on Wednesday night.

Alex Goldstein and Julie Pecht scored second-half goals, as the Cougars edged the host Knights 2-1 in a nonconference match.

Kristen Guglielmi and Alissa Menotti had assists for Vernon Hills (2-2), which handed Grayslake North (5-1) its first loss of the season. The Knights’ goal also came in the second half.

Huntley 1, Grayslake Central 0: The Red Raiders scored an own goal in the opening half of the Fox Valley Conference crossover.

“I thought defensively we did some good things against a more technical team,” Grayslake Central coach Mike McCaulou said. “We lost on an own goal and that is always tough. Playing against good programs like Huntley will only make us better.”

Rams keeper Rachel Effa made 14 saves.

Carmel 2, Benet 1: At Benedictine University in Lisle, Sarah McHugh and Elizabeth Bream scored for the Corsairs in their East Suburban Catholic Conference opener.

Bri Carlson assisted on McHugh’s goal for Carmel (4-2).
