Meline, Vernon Hills spring into action

Vernon Hills’ softball team got its Spring Break trip to Alabama off to an exciting start.

Megan Meline’s walk-off, 2-run double in the bottom of the fifth rallied the Cougars to a 3-2 win over Southside in Gulf Shores, Ala.

A time limit shortened the game by 2 innings.

It was Vernon Hills’ second straight walk-off win, after Jordyn Comitor provided similar heroics last week.

Before Meline, Sami Freibrun also doubled in a run in the Cougars’ 3-run fifth. Kristina Kliver had a double, as well, while Carly Alm contributed a single and run scored. Jenn Claussen (2-1) allowed 2 runs over 5 innings for the win.

Daphne 3, Vernon Hills 1: In the Cougars’ second game of the day in Gulf Shores, Ala., Daphne scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, and the game was called due to a time limit again.

Anya Mollenhauer’s RBI double in the fourth had pulled Vernon Hills even. Jordyn Comitor yielded 2 earned runs over 423 innings in suffering the loss for the Cougars, who fell to 2-2 and 1-1 on their trip.

Antioch sweeps: Amber Mysliwiec homered and doubled twice, as the host Sequoits defeated West Aurora 9-8, completing a sweep of the nonconference doubleheader.

Winning pitcher Katie Phillips also had a double for Antioch.

The Sequoits won the opener 5-1 behind the pitching of Phillips as well. Mysliwiec had a double.

Wauconda sweeps: Pounding out 16 hits over two games, which included a 6-for-7 effort at the plate from Megan Luchowski, Wauconda swept a doubleheader against Woodstock North, 9-8 and 5-1.
