South Elgin gets best of Streamwood

The Streamwood Sabres’ girls soccer team was short-handed during the second day of the annual South Elgin spring break tournament, and the South Elgin Storm took advantage.

The Storm (3-3) shut out the Sabres 3-0 Monday at Millennium Field in Streamwood to open the second day of tournament play. The Storm defense shut the Sabres down throughout the game, not allowing a shot on goal to Streamwood in the first half and only letting up 2 shots in the second half.

“I’m very fortunate to have a junior leader back there in Natalie Castro,” said South Elgin coach Tiffany Disher. “The girls look up to her, and we’re able to use that leadership right next to a very strong freshman in Veronica Noyszewski. (Noyszewski) is a coach’s dream and blessing right now, she has no fear and is finding her place on the team quite well.”

Storm sophomore Savanah Uveges tallied 2 goals; the first coming in the first half off a pass from freshman Alyssa Shipon, and the second on a penalty kick midway through the second half. Freshman Delaney Kelleher had the other goal for the Storm 10 minutes into the second half on a pass from senior Lauren Vedrine.

“I was very proud of the girls to be able to dominate the game and possess the ball and switch the fields, because that’s what we’ve been working on,” said Disher. “Now we just have to utilize those gaps and know when to penetrate the defense.”

The Sabres (1-5-1) had some of their younger players on display, including freshman goalkeeper Nathalie Guindon (8 saves). The Sabres were missing five starters because of spring break, but head coach Matt Polovin was happy with what he saw from the younger girls who stepped up to the challenge.

“(Guindon) has been doing phenomenal,” he said. “The girls were out there doing the best they can, and had that no-quit attitude. That’s what I appreciate the most.”
