Blackhawks appreciated Shaw's 'gutsy' play

Whenever Andrew Shaw is near the net, good things seem to follow.

Arm, leg, skate, stick, the pesky rookie doesn't care where the puck hits him as long as the end result is a goal.

And that's certainly been the case lately for Shaw, who has 7 points, including 4 goals, during his four-game scoring streak.

It was that way again Wednesday when Shaw deflected in Johnny Oduya's blast to give the Hawks a 2-1 overtime victory against Vancouver.

“Whether you use a term fearless, or gutsy, you could add some more terms to that, but you appreciate the way he competes for either himself, or his teammates, or his team,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “You seem to use him as the game gets even more important.”

“He's one of those players, he doesn't mind the dirty work, and good things happen for him,” Marian Hossa added.

And the guy pays the price for his glory, that's for sure. On Wednesday, Shaw took some big hits, including a monster shot from Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler.

“I get banged around a lot in every game,” Shaw said with a laugh. “A smaller guy kind of in everyone's ear — people may have some hatred for me out there on the other team. I just try to stick to my game.”

“He has always played like that I think, and you watch the way he's played, and in juniors, and I think that's what he got drafted for,” Duncan Keith said.

And he's not going to stop.

“I get hit, get back up and keep going,” Shaw said. “I don't let it bother me.

“You just have to watch out for those big guys.”
