Voters reject proposal for Winfield election districts

Winfield voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to change the village board from at-large representation to a six-district system.

With all 13 precincts reporting, roughly 69 percent of voters opposed the proposal, while roughly 31 percent favored creation of districts.

First-term Trustee Tim Allen led the charge to change to a district system, saying he believes the move would ensure more fair representation throughout the village and less contentious local elections.

Allen previously said if voters rejected the idea Tuesday, he would abandon it and not aim to put the proposal back on the ballot.
