Des Plaines man charged with cocaine possession, battery to a police officer

A 23-year-old Des Plaines man has been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and battery to a police officer at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

Cook County Judge John Tourtelot set bail at $100,000 for Devon McKenzie, of the 1500 block of Thacker Street, during a bond hearing Saturday in Rolling Meadows.

The arrest resulted from a Schaumburg police undercover investigation Friday night involving another man who sold officers 20 pills of MDA for $350, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Anisa Jordan. After police took the man into custody, he told them McKenzie, who had driven with him to the shopping center, had cocaine. As the officers approached the vehicle, McKenzie pushed, struck and injured one of the officers, Jordan said. The other officer saw McKenzie toss something onto the ground, Jordan said

Police recovered nine grams of a substance that field tested positive for cocaine, Jordan said.

McKenzie appeared for his bond hearing wearing hospital scrubs. Cook County Assistant Public Defender Felicia Weiss told the court that McKenzie had been hit in the head with a flashlight and his injury had required stitches.

McKenzie received one-year supervision in 2006 for possession of alcohol by a minor. He next appears in court on April 12.
