U-46 school news for week of March 19

School activities for the upcoming week.

South Elgin High School

On Thursday, the Festival Band will perform a concert at the school at 7 p.m.

During spring recess, students from the orchestra and choral groups will perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Streamwood High School

On Thursday, a choral concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission for students is $1, families are $5.

Abbott Middle School

On Thursday, the Warrior Wednesday program will be the “Dancing Mad Scientist.” So You Think You Can Do Science" runs 45 minutes and gets its name from the hit reality show "So You Think You Can Dance."

Jeffrey Vinokur's performance incorporates audience participation, upbeat music, occasional jaw-dropping dance moves, and stunning chemistry, and of course drives home an educational message. In addition to being an entertainer, Vinokur is also a Biochemistry student and an active researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he is involved in studying chemical approaches to treat Cancer.

Kenyon Woods Middle School

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., band students from the school will join with feeder school band students from Clinton, Fox Meadow, Garfield, Liberty, Nature Ridge, Wayne and Willard to present a Band Concert at South Elgin High School.

On Thursday, an Orchestra Concert will take place in the school auditorium at 7 p.m. Also participating are orchestra students in grades 5-6 from the feeder schools which include: Clinton, Fox Meadow, Garfield, Liberty, Nature Ridge, Wayne and Willard.

Tefft Middle School

Monday through Thursday evening at 7 p.m., the play “Beauty & the Beast” will be presented in the school auditorium. Admission is $5 each night or $10 for all four nights.

Fox Meadow Elementary

On Tuesday, students in grades 1-3 will present their Spring Sing at 6:30 p.m. at South Elgin High School.

Harriet Gifford Elementary

During the entire week, students will celebrate a “Dog-gone Great Week to Read.” Week-long events include dropping everything to read when the song “Who Let the Dogs Out” is played; welcoming guest readers on Tuesday; reading with 5 therapy dogs on Wednesday; author Craig Pierce and his dog Honey spending the entire day Thursday at Gifford including Family Night from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and looking forward to Friday afternoon “Flash Mob” to celebrate upcoming Spring Break.

Hawk Hollow Elementary

On Tuesday, the all-school community service event, Jump Rope for Heart, will take place. Students will participate in heart-healthy activities in the gym, such as high jump, basketball shoot, hula hoop, and jump rope to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Hillcrest Elementary

On Thursday, students in grades 1-3 will perform a Spring Sing at Larkin High School at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Liberty Elementary

On Wednesday, students in grades 5-6 will take part in the annual Spelling Bee in the gym at 9:30 a.m.

In other news,

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Talent Fest will be held at the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin. Each of the U-46 high schools will feature two finalists. The audience will decide the top 5! Admission is $5 per person. Tickets can be purchased online at http://hemmens.org or at the box office.

On Thursday, a public Planetarium show will be presented at 6 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The building is located at 312 Watch St. near the corner of Raymond St. in Elgin. The 50 minute show is $3 per person. Please go to the U-46 website www.u-46.org under “district information” to find out more.

The second phase of the U-46 "Art is Elementary" show opened with a reception on March 15; the display continues through April 12. Schools with artwork featured are: Bartlett, Channing, Coleman, Glenbrook, Hanover Countryside, Harriet Gifford, Hawk Hollow, Heritage, Highland, Laurel Hill, Lowrie, McKinley, Ontarioville, Otter Creek, Parkwood, Ridge Circle, Sheridan, Spring Trail, Timber Trails, and Wayne Elementary Schools.

The shows are in the lower floor of the First Community Bank at 50 Tyler Creek Plaza (corner of Big Timber Rd. and McLean Blvd.) in Elgin. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m.- noon. The public is welcome.

During Spring Break, beginning March 26, Hanover Township will hold open gyms at four U-46 schools.

On Monday, Bartlett Elementary at 111 E. North Ave. in Bartlett will have open gym from 12-4 p.m. for children ages 5-14. A balloon artist will be performing from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 27, Tefft Middle School will host an open gym from 12-4 p.m. at 1100 Shirley Ave. in Streamwood for children ages 7-18. DJ Reggie will perform between 12:30-3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 28, Parkwood Elementary at 2150 Laurel Ave. in Hanover Park, will host an open gym from 12-4 p.m. for children ages 5-14. The “Amazing Animal Show” will be presented from 1:30-3:00 p.m.

On Thursday, March 29, Lords Park Elementary will host the open gym from 12-4 p.m. at 323 Waverly Dr. in Elgin for children ages 5-14. A balloon artist will perform from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

There will be no School News the week of March 26 because of Spring Recess.
