No one injured in Crystal Lake apartments fire

Fire officials are still investigating a cause for a fire that displaced numerous residents in an apartment complex early Thursday morning.

No one was seriously injured in the 1 a.m. blaze that sparked in a second-floor unit in the 600 block of N. Virginia Road, fire officials said. However, several people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and released.

Officials said a phoned 9-1-1 saying she was trapped in her apartment by flames and smoke. She was later rescued by members of the fire department, officials said.

In addition, Crystal Lake Police officers initiated evacuation of the building and helped rescue people on second and third floor balconies prior to the arrival by the fire department.

Firefighters said heavy smoke was showing on the second and third floors of the building upon their arrival, and that people were trapped in their apartments and on their balconies on the second and third floors.

Firefighters had to use ladders to get people off their balconies, authorities said, while other firefighters attacked the flames inside.

The fire caused about $300,000 in damages before it was snuffed out early Thursday.

Crystal Lake firefighters were assisted by fire departments in Algonquin, Barrington, Cary, East Dundee, Fox River Grove, Huntley, Lakewood, Nunda, Marengo, McHenry and Woodstock.

Officials said 26 people were displaced by the fire, smoke and water damage. Those people were assisted by the American Red Cross.

The Crystal Lake Building Department and fire marshalls are investigating and working with the property manager to restore the apartment complex to a habitable condition.
