Schaumburg OKs plan for adult day care center

An adult care center for senior citizens is headed to Schaumburg later this year.

Center for Seniors, proposed for what is currently a vacant lot at 611 Remington Road, received approval Tuesday for its site plan and special use variance from the Schaumburg Village Board.

The Center for Seniors will provide day care for individuals age 60 and above Monday through Friday, said Young Ha, project coordinator. It will operate from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provide van transportation for clients to and from the site. The center will have space for 60 clients and will provide meals as well as social, educational and exercise activities, Ha said.

“With our aging population there’s certainly a need for these kinds of facilities,” said Julie Summers Fitzgerald, director of community development for the village.

Fitzgerald said there was a similar adult day care facility in Schaumburg, but that it has been closed for several years. The village operates a senior center that provides programming like bingo or bowling night, but Center for Seniors, a nonprofit organization with two other locations, would provide services for those who are unable to be left alone unsupervised.

The petitioners run a similar center in Chicago and another in Morton Grove, Ha said.

“So many senior citizens needed this service and our other locations were too far away, so we needed a closer center for them,” Ha said.

Ha added that most clients won’t be paying for the service because their income levels fall below the poverty level.

“Some of these people cannot live alone and when their children go to work, this gives them peace of mind that their parents are safe and happy,” Ha said. “It keeps them out of the nursing home a little longer and keeps them in the community instead of being institutionalized.”
