Hersey Jazz Band shines at festivals

The John Hersey High School Jazz Band had a busy and successful weekend in February, displaying its talents at two prestigious events. On Feb. 23, Hersey’s Jazz Band was among an elite group of five high school bands to perform alongside some of the best college jazz bands in the nation at the 45th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, the second-oldest of its kind, drawing some of the best collegiate musicians from throughout the country — and even internationally this year.

Doug Beach, Elmhurst College’s director of jazz studies said, “Years ago, high schools participated in the festival when there were fewer college groups. Today, there’s a long waiting list to get in.”

Hersey’s Jazz Band was selected for its dedication to developing musicians and consistent performance excellence. Last year, Hersey’s Jazz Band was chosen to perform at The Chicago Jazz Festival.

After their performance, Hersey was critiqued by the Jeff Hamilton Trio.

“The educational experience is unparalleled,” Beach said. “It’s huge, just the fact that you can get instant feedback on your performance from these world-renowned musicians.”

Hersey’s Jazz Program also excelled at the Rolling Meadows High School, Jazz in the Meadows on Feb. 25. The Jazz Band I took second place, and both Jazz Band II and the Jazz Combo took top prize in their respective divisions. In addition, JHHS sophomore Liam Burke, percussionist, was named outstanding soloist for the entire competition.

Scott Casagrande is director of bands at Hersey.
