St. Mary BG 'Scientists' go to Regionals
St. Mary School Buffalo Grove held their annual science fair in December and now eight students will go onto the Regional event March 10-11 at the Museum of Science & Industry.
All seventh grade students complete a science project which consists of a formal written report, backboard display and oral presentation. Once a week, science class is devoted to learning about how to put together a different component of the project from research to experimentation to writing a formal report and organizing a backboard and presentation.
The projects begin in August with topic selection and conclude in December with the school science fair. The top eight science projects advance to the regional competition at the Museum of Science and Industry. The regional competition will take place March 10-11.
Saint Mary School has hosted a science fair for over 25 years. SMS belongs to the Illinois Junior Academy of Science and follow their guidelines for the completion. IJAS objectives are numerous however the organization exists solely for the benefit of student. According to the ISJA website it allows “students who will not necessarily become a science specialist some insight into the problems and methods of thinking that are particular to the scientist but applicable to other occupations, information concerning new investigations and discoveries in science, and an understanding of the science-produced equipment used. It encourages students with special ability and interest in science to go beyond the limits of the classroom in developing their own ideas and perhaps aiding them in their progress towards a career in science”.
Congratulations to all the Saint Mary School seventh-graders.
Additional congratulations go out to first place science fair winner Noah L. and the other seven seventh-graders that will participate at the museum next weekend. Good Luck, Go Bison!
