English Channel Swimmer Speaks to Elgin Lions

The Elgin Lions Club will meet at the Holiday Inn at 495 Airport Rd. at 6:15 on Tuesday, March 6th. The speaker will be Doug McConnell. Mr. McConnell made news last summer when he swam the English Channel on August 21. At age 53, he was the 48th person over the age of 50 to complete that feat. He swam to promote charities. He raised $120,000 for the Les Turner ALS Foundation, and the reason for selecting that particular charity is that his father, David, died of that disease. He is expected to tell us about the grueling ordeal of swimming 21 miles through cold and turbulent water for 14.5 hours.

Those interested in attending should contact Lion President Ed Bates at batesed@cod.edu, or leave a message indicating your planned attendance at 847-289-4206. The meeting of the club includes a meal to which the public is invited. Advance notification of attendance is necessary to provide adequate seating and meals.
