Jefferson third-graders win Great Citizen Award
Hoffman Estates Mayor William D. McLeod recognized 33 Thomas Jefferson School third-graders with the Great Citizen Award Feb. 22 in honor of their fundraising efforts to provide car seats for needy children.
Third-grade teachers Mrs. Schmidt and Ms. Aiello said the children were given three holiday gift choices from their teachers — a small individual gift, a gift for the classroom or a monetary donation to children in need.
The classes unanimously decided to donate money toward the purchase of car seats for less fortunate children in need of safe transportation.
“We are so proud of their choices every day,” said Mrs. Schmidt. Mrs. Aiello added, “This is just one example of how our students demonstrate their good character.”
Even more remarkable was that the students asked to fundraise in order to purchase more car seats. Instead of buying one booster seat, the children raised enough money to purchase a convertible infant seat and two booster seats.
“What you have done here is fantastic,” said Mayor McLeod to the students. “You didn’t think about yourselves and, thanks to you, there are young people who are getting the opportunity to be safe.”
The teachers and students also thanked Mrs. Kerri Ash for her assistance organizing the fundraiser and purchasing the car seats on their behalf.
“One of the goals of the Hoffman Estates Police Department is to educate citizens on the importance of having a child seat properly installed,” said Sgt. Carl Baumert.
“We are proud to offer free child seat inspections to our residents by one of our three certified technicians. Thanks to the generosity of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, the police department will be able to provide child seats to families in need.”
The Great Citizen Award was designed to recognize and honor individuals and groups who go above and beyond to serve the community.
