Sanity an issue in sex case
Attorneys for a Hanover Park man and former math teacher charged with sexual exploitation of a child raised the issue of their client’s sanity during a hearing Thursday in Rolling Meadows.
Paul LaDuke, 75, was charged last November with the Class 4 felony after his 16- and 17-year-old Schaumburg Christian School algebra students claimed he exposed himself while sitting behind a podium.
“Mr. LaDuke has decreased frontal lobe function which was confirmed by a PET scan of his brain,” said defense attorney Franklin J. Furlett.
The brain scan and neuropsychological tests performed recently at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village confirmed that LaDuke suffers from a condition called lobe dysfunction which compromises his impulse control and social inhibitions, Furlett said.
“It’s a sad story,” said Furlett who, along with co-counsel Irv Seidler informed prosecutors on Thursday of their intention to pursue an insanity defense.
LaDuke, who has no criminal background, is free on a $40,000 bond. He is prohibited from having contact with the victims, their families or anyone under 18.
He next appears in court on March 13.
