Woman charged with leaving child unattended at Woodfield

A 38-year-old Chicago woman was arrested in Schaumburg earlier this month after she reportedly left her 8-year-old son unattended in the children’s play area of Woodfield Mall.

Paula Yolanda Mendoza-Corral, of the 2800 block of South Kedvale, was charged with endangering the life/health of a child, a misdemeanor.

A mall cleaning crew found the boy alone about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 when they arrived to clean the play area, police reports indicate. Mendoza-Corral contacted customer service an hour and a half later, according to reports.

She reportedly told officers she and her family had been shopping, but she would periodically check on her son. When she first discovered him missing, she said she looked in all his favorite stores before contacting authorities.

Her court date is March 23.
