Off-duty cop shoots person in Fermilab parking lot

An off-duty police officer who reportedly witnessed a hit-and-run crash in West Chicago followed the offending vehicle and shot one of the occupants during a confrontation Saturday, police said. The DuPage County sheriff's office released little information, but a hospital spokeswoman said the person shot was in stable condition yesterday. No charges had been filed yet. Full story.

Medicaid use skyrockets in suburbs

The number of suburban residents enrolled in Medicaid has skyrocketed in recent years, even as Gov. Pat Quinn takes aim at funding for the health care program for the poor. Suburban enrollment in the Medicaid program has risen drastically since the state's 2006 fiscal year: 89 percent in DuPage County, 76 percent in Kane, 103 percent in McHenry, 73 percent in Lake, 84 percent in Will, and 19 percent in Cook County. Man robs bank inside Schaumburg grocery store

The FBI has released surveillance photos of a suspect who robbed a Schaumburg bank early last night. Police said the suspect, described as a black man in his 20s wearing a dark hoodie and glasses slipped a note demanding money to a teller at the TCF Bank inside Jewel-Osco, 1151 S. Roselle Road. The man left with an undisclosed amount of money at about 5:45 p.m. Full story.

Schaumburg to spend $9 million to fight ash borer

The village of Schaumburg is embarking on a 10-year, $9 million program to eradicate the emerald ash borer, that will eventually result in taking down most of the village's ash trees and replacing them with a variety of other species. “There's going to be a lot of trees missing,” Schaumburg Village Manager Ken Fritz concedes. Vernons Hills singer to be on "The Voice"

Viewers of “The Voice” may see a familiar face Monday night as Jamie Thompson, 22, of Vernon Hills is poised to make his national singing debut during his audition on the NBC singing-reality show. Thompson, a 2007 graduate of Vernon Hills High School, has been singing for several years and has covers of popular oldies and original songs on his YouTube and Facebook pages, where he goes by the stage name Jamie Lono. Rosemont job fair to fill hundreds of positions

A number of new Rosemont businesses are looking to hire hundreds of employees during a three-day job fair, which will run through Tuesday at The Park at Rosemont. The businesses at the city's new entertainment district will be filling full- and part-time positions at Adobe Gila's Margarita Fajita Cantina, Five Roses Pub, Kings Lanes & Lounge, and Zanies Comedy Club. Johnsburg man in critical condition after falling through ice

A Johnsburg man was in critical condition last night after he was submerged in a backyard pond for 31 minutes, according to fire officials. The man in his late 40s was skating with his son on a pond behind their house when he fell through the ice. The man was unresponsive when a diver located him, and he was flown to a Libertyville hospital. Full story.

Crawford solid in Blackhawks' third win in a row

After a brutal 9-game skid, the Blackhawks seem to be back on track, now having won three in row. Yesterday's 3-1 victory over the rival St. Louis Blues was a “goalie win,” according to coach Joel Quenneville. Cory Crawford made 14 saves in the first period and kept the Hawks in the game until the team pumped three goals in the net in the third. The strong performance came just three days before the trade deadline, which had some fans calling for the team to pick up a veteran goaltender. Full story.
