Possible arson under investigation in Woodridge

Authorities are investigating a possible arson Monday morning at a Woodridge apartment building.

No one was hurt in the blaze reported just before 3 a.m. at the Windsor Lakes complex on the 7300 block of Woodward Avenue, officials said.

Early reports indicate the fire originated at the door of a first-floor unit. A man who lived there was at work at the time, said Fire Prevention Director Robert Morris of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District.

“We saw burn patterns on the door and the floor,” Morris said. “It’s a little suspect right now. We’re taking samples to confirm or disprove some things.”

Authorities said the fire turned out to be relatively small but generated intense smoke, causing an estimated $25,000 damage.

Several residents of the three-story building were evacuated and one escaped through a first-floor window. Firefighters said the majority of the residents already have been allowed to return and — other than the man in the damaged unit — the others should be back home within a day.

Morris said the fire struck a section of the building that has about 15 apartments, and firefighters forced their way into several units before finding the source. He said there are about 45 units in the building.

Firefighters from the Downers Grove, Pleasantview, Argonne, Lisle-Woodridge and Westmont fire departments assisted.

Woodridge police said no charges were filed as of Monday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing.
