Mount Prospect man charged with theft

A 24-year-old Mount Prospect man who had outstanding arrest warrants related to unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor was charged with retail theft after he took six cases of beer from a store in Elk Grove Village, authorities said.

Uriel Sanchez Ortiz, of the 0-100 block of Windsor Drive, was arrested by Elk Grove police Feb. 17 after he left the Jewel-Osco store on Biesterfield Road without having paid for the beer, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Katherine Levine said Saturday at Sanchez Ortiz's bond hearing.

The store's assistant manager followed Sanchez Ortiz to the parking lot and confronted him as he was loading the beer in the back seat of the vehicle, Levine said. Sanchez Ortiz drove off, but was apprehended a short time later by police, she said.

Sanchez Ortiz had three warrants for his arrest related to a 2006 charge of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, including warrants for violating the terms of his conditional discharge and supervision, Levine said.

Sanchez Ortiz's bail was set at a cumulative $33,000 for all four charges. He is due in court next on March 1.
