BG Idol raises $1,500 for Autism Speaks

The Buffalo Grove High School Student Council raised about $1,500 for Autism Speaks on Feb. 8, at the sixth annual BG Idol competition.

Held during lunch periods in the school theater, the popular musical competition showcased philanthropic-minded staff members who volunteered to perform before a packed audience of students and staff, all in the name of raising funds for Autism Speaks.

Participating staff, teachers and guidance counselors belted out songs into a microphone, to the cheers and sometimes jeers of the responsive audience.

Each participating BG staff member collected money in a bucket bearing his/her name prior to the actual event. At the end of the contest, the staff member with the largest individual collection was Lisa Raucci, who accumulated $78 in her bucket.

The popular vote, determined by audience applause, went to Kevin Trow (4th and 6th periods), and Brian VanderArk (5th period). All three winners are science teachers.

English teacher Kate Hutchinson shared a bit of her own personal inspiration before singing, as she dedicated her performance to her autistic son.

Student Council will present a check for $1,500 to Autism Speaks to help fund research, raise awareness, and find a cure for autism and related disorders.
