Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan officially cut the ribbon to celebrate the grand opening of its new Same Day Surgery Unit and Wound Care Center. The event was held Thursday evening, Feb. 2, to commemorate the renovations that represented an investment of more than $3 million. A number of local officials and other community leaders joined Vista's management team and medical staff for the event.

“We're especially proud of what these two new units mean to Vista because they'll help us do a better job of serving our patients,” said Barbara J. Martin, President & Chief Executive Officer of Vista. “But what this grand opening really represents is our ongoing commitment to the community. When you look at the investment we're making in Waukegan and all over Lake County, you can see that we truly are committed to the future of our communities we serve.”

Illinois State Senator Terry Link (D, 30th, of Waukegan) spoke to the crowd and related his own positive experience on the quality of care he received at Vista during a recent visit to the E.R. In his remarks, Waukegan Mayor Robert Sabonjian emphasized the important role that Vista plays in the community.

The Same Day Surgery Unit includes 12 rooms on the first floor of the hospital that are primarily used for outpatient surgical patients before and after surgery. On the day of their surgery, patients enter the unit from a new entrance on the far east side of the hospital near Sheridan Road. They walk downstairs to the reception area before they are brought upstairs for their surgery.

The lower level also is the home of the new Vista Wound Care Center that now includes two Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers to speed up the healing of wounds. Patients are typically referred to the Vista Wound Care Center by their primary care physicians or other specialists. The Wound Care Center is a joint venture between Vista Health System and Accelecare Wound Centers – one of the leading operators of wound centers in America.
