Here’s why a zygote is a child

I have more than once suggested that leftists/progressives/liberals are losing, or have indeed lost, the ability for critical and logical thought. Since having said that, I’ve looked for examples to prove that idea true, and I’ve recently found another to write about.

“How can a fertilized human egg be called a child?” asks a recent letter writer. Well, let’s look at that for a moment.

I think it was Jesse Jackson who once said, “If it’s growing, it’s alive. That being said, once an egg is fertilized, be it human or otherwise, it begins to grow. So is Jackson right? Is it “alive?” Logic tells me that it most certainly is.

Enter biology. Every known growing thing has been assigned a “genus,” correct? To which “genus” does the fertilized egg within a woman’s womb belong?

Following this so far? OK, let’s go to the other end of the spectrum for a moment and look at the adult. Every one of us, if we go back in time far enough, can find ourselves at this stage — the fertilized egg. Had any other sperm fertilized that egg, or had the same sperm fertilized some other egg, would we, our unique selves, have resulted from that union? No.

And an embryo is not a child until born. First of all, “embryos” aren’t “born.” But I digress. The bottom line is, no matter what you want to call it, the child/baby/fetus/embryo/blastocyst/zygote inside its mother’s womb is human, it is a unique human being, and intentionally ending its life is … c’mon, you can say it.

Final thought. If MY version of “critical thought/logic” is faulty, please point it out and explain.
