‘Liberal’ press just doing its job
This is in response to P.J. Dalton (Fence Post, Jan. 18) and his unhappiness about what he perceives as the “liberal press” because of questions put forth by Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos during a recent Republican debate.
Most of the Republicans participating in these debates have made contraception issues and same-sex marriage the linchpins of their campaign strategy to win the nomination of their party. These are the issues they have espoused from the beginning to prove their bona fides as the best “conservative” candidate.
So now along comes P.J. Dalton, whose sensibilities have been wounded by questions on these selfsame issues by what he condemns as a “liberal” bias. Sawyer started her career as a Republican; has she changed?
During these debates have we heard anything about how these candidates intend to create jobs except through lowering taxes even lower for the 1 percent — even as this remedy has been disproved, exemplified by the stagnant job market — in spite of the fact taxes are as low they were in the 1940s? Deregulation got us into the mess we’re in, and yet that is another remedy they extol as a job generator. Anything new?
If bashing President Obama and doing everything they possibly can to make him a one-term president — even scuttling the economy to make him look bad — could be translated into a successful jobs program, right now our unemployment rate would be about 3 percent.
But that’s right up there with that other illusion, the so-called “liberal” press.
So remember, P.J. Dalton, the questions asked are relating to the words out of the candidates’ mouths themselves. Why should they not be asked during a debate, so we can all know what their intentions are before they get our vote?
