McGlone's career night lifts Streamwood by Larkin
Streamwood sophomore Hannah McGlone didn't gloat about her career scoring and rebounding night against Larkin Wednesday.
In fact, it was another statistic McGlone was happier about than her points and rebounds.
One foul.
"Usually I have three by halftime," she smiled.
But staying out of foul trouble was key to more minutes on the floor for the Sabres' 6-foot center, and it also led to not only her career night but Streamwood's best offensive night of the season as well.
McGlone scored a career-high 33 points and had a career-best 16 rebounds as the Sabres opened up a close game in the second half and defeated Larkin 69-55 in Upstate Eight River girls basketball action at Streamwood.
"Against Marian Catholic (Monday) Hannah had a lot of good looks and didn't finish," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "That was on her mind and she was very focused on finishing tonight. But even though she had a career high in points and rebounds she was most proud of just having one foul."
McGlone was able to get free in the lane at will against a much smaller Larkin team. She scored 13 of her points in the fourth quarter when the Sabres (9-10, 5-3) put the game away, scoring on offensive putbacks three straight times to open the quarter, which sparked a 13-2 Streamwood run that gave the Sabres a 57-44 lead after a McGlone layup with 5:11 left in the game.
"She's a beast," said Larkin coach Tissanie Simmons. "We were prepared for it but a lot of our girls are unfamiliar with how to guard a post. They used it to their advantage and got away with it."
McGlone agreed the size advantage she possessed made a big difference.
"The height did help but knowing my teammates would be reversing the ball helped a lot too," she said. "I was able to see our open shots and I knew I could be there for the rebounds."
Larkin (3-17, 0-8) stayed right with the Sabres in the first half and used an 8-0 run to close out the first 16 minutes with a 28-27 lead. Senior Maggie Hofmann (17 points) hit two of her 5 3-pointers in the final 1:11 to send the Royals into the break on top. But Streamwood opened the second half with a 14-2 run that ended on Brittany Delao's basket with 2:31 left in the third, a bucket that gave the Sabres a 44-30 lead.
But Larkin came back with a 12-0 spurt of its own and closed to within 44-42 on a basket by Abby Alvarez (9 points) with 7 seconds left.
Streamwood owned the fourth quarter, though, and led by as many as 20 at 69-49 with just under a minute to play.
"We came out much more focused and played much better in the second half," said Rosner, whose injured and ill team shot 31 of 61 and outrebounded Larkin 40-27. "The hard part was to get everyone rest when they needed it. They're all sick and they all played hard tonight. I'm proud of them."
Junior Jessica Cerda added 12 points, 4 assist and 3 steals for the Sabres, while sophomore Holly Foret also had 12 points to go along with 4 steals and 3 assists. Junior Deja Moore added 8 points and 3 assists. Sophomore Tori Patterson added 14 points for Larkin and senior Allison Driskill had 10.
"We just got too excited," said Simmons, whose team turned the ball over 13 times in the second half. "We needed to slow down and have some patience. When they go into overdrive and rush things, turnovers start to happen."
