The Mount Prospect Police Department is pleased to announce the graduation of Sgt. Edward Szmergalski from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety.
Szmergalski successfully completed the 10 week Staff and Command Program held in Evanston from Sept. 26 to Dec. 9. This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated over 10,000 students both nationally and internationally. Szmergalski was a student in SPSC Class #322, which accommodated a total of 15 students for the 10-week period. Szmergalski was elected by his peers as the Class Historian of Class #322.
The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of 22 core or mandatory blocks of instruction and nine optional blocks of instruction during each session. The major topics of study include: Management and Management Theory, Organizational Behavior, Human Resources for Law Enforcement, Budgeting, Staffing Allocation, and Personnel Deployment.
The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development.
The Mount Prospect Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Szmergalski’s attendance at this program. Many of the program’s graduates go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies. Currently, over 750 graduates hold the title of chief of police, and 39 of the 50 directors of state police agencies across the nation are graduates of this program.
