Recalling ‘temporary’ toll increase

The ending of World War II had ushered in an era of ambitious interstate highway building in the Chicago area. Old Chicago neighborhoods were razed and replaced with wide concrete ribbons that quickly became part of our interstate system.

It was an ambitious program but soon fell victim to a cost overrun. Many of us recall that a quick easy fix was quickly put in place to make up that short fall. It had been decided that a 10-cent temporary toll would be collected at exit and entry points for the period of one year to make up the shortfall and the roads would be toll free thereafter.

A good number of us were young kids at that time, now presently retirees, who have seen that one year temporary toll period stretch into a permanent one and with it ever-increasing tolls as well.

It would seem foolhardy to believe any politician can give you a temporary tax.
