Batavia High School to host dance and flag competition

Batavia High School Dance Team will host a TEAMDance Illinois Regional Dance and Flag competition and Christian Suburban & Northern IL Big 12 Conference Championships Sunday, Jan. 8, at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

The “Batavia Dance Classic” competition consists of 51 varsity and junior varsity teams from the Northern Illinois area competing for placement and state bids in six categories of dance in Divisions 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A and four flag categories in Divisions of Contemporary Flag and Traditional Flag, as well as best artistic routine and best technical performance.

The day long event has more than 760 participants performing in 85 routines in various categories. Dance categories include Pom, Open Pom, Open Dance, Lyrical, Kick and Hip Hop; the Flag categories include Winter Guard Show, Tall Flag, Short Flag and Lyrical Flag.

Routines are evaluated on both artistic and technical content. Based on scores, top varsity contenders can qualify for the TDI Varsity State Championship held March 4 at Peoria Civic Center, Peoria. JV teams can qualify for the TDI JV Invitational, which will be Feb. 12 at Argo High School.

The day will close with a special exhibition performance by iDance teams of Moves Dance Studio in North Aurora, a recreational, competitive and performance dance team for dancers ages 9-15, and iDance Mini, which is for ages 7-8.

The teams are designed to give members a skill-building outlet to perform in a variety of dance forms and to enhance self-esteem, self-confidence and team work. For details about iDance, visit movesdance.com.
