Woman injured in Fox Lake New Year's Eve crash
A 74-year-old Wisconsin woman was injured in a brutal head-on collision on Route 12 in Fox Lake, police officials said.
Joanne Rymark, of Winneconne, Wis., was heading north on Route 12 in her 2010 Lexus at 9:52 a.m. Saturday when she attempted to turn left onto Hartigan Road, said Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz.
Rymark was not in the left-turn lane, but rather attempted to turn from a main traffic lane into the roadway near the Fox Lake Menard's store, Gliniewicz said.
When crossing Route 12, Rymark collided head-on with a southbound 1999 Chrysler driven by a 29-year-old Fox Lake woman.
Gliniewicz said both drivers were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He initially said Rymark had been killed in the crash, but family members later said she survived and was hospitalized. No condition report was available.
The driver of the Chrysler remains in stable condition in the hospital.
Officials from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team were called to the scene to investigate the accident. That investigation is ongoing.
Gliniewicz said citations are pending the outcome of the investigation.
Southbound lanes of Route 12 were closed for about four hours following the crash.
