Rookie Hayes gets a shot with Hawks

Brandon Pirri, Ben Smith and Jeremy Morin have had their shots to come up from Rockford and make an impression as rookies with the Blackhawks.

Now it’s Jimmy Hayes’ turn.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound winger was recalled from Rockford on Thursday, with Pirri going back down, and will be in the lineup on the fourth line Friday against Detroit.

“It’s a dream come true,” Hayes said. “It’s what I worked for my whole life and what I’ve been trying to get at. It was a great phone call to get.

“I finally get a chance and it’s a big game for me to step right in. It’s great to get thrown right into the fire. Hopefully I can go out there and execute and play my best.”

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Hayes earned the promotion. The 22-year-old winger had 5 goals and 13 assists in 28 games at Rockford in his first full pro season.

“I like his size, he has a nice set of hands and some quickness to his game,” Quenneville said. “It’s a pretty big setting for his first NHL game so it should be fun for him. I’m looking forward to it.”

Hayes is a good skater for a guy his size.

“I noticed in camp, I thought he had some quickness in his stride,” Quenneville said. “He’s got some movement in tight areas, a little jump to his step, and we’re going to need that (Friday) night. We’ve got a quick team coming in here.”

Kane to center:Maybe a move back to center will get Patrick Kane out of his goal drought.Kane spent the first two months of the season playing center and will be back there full-time against Detroit between Patrick Sharp and Viktor Stalberg.Kane, who saw shifts at center in the third period of Wednesday#146;s loss to Los Angeles, had only 2 goals in 12 games as a winger.#147;The last few times I went to center it seems like we had a little more balance, once in Pittsburgh and again (Wednesday) night,#148; Kane said. #147;I#146;m excited. Sharpie been playing great and so has Stalberg, so I#146;m playing with two pretty confident guys right now.#148;With Kane going back to center it allowed for Brandon Pirri to be returned to Rockford after three so-so games.#147;We want to put Kaner at center,#148; Joel Quenneville said. #147;He seems to have the puck a little more. We#146;ll have more threats on both lines with him in the middle right now.#148;A new day:Joel Quenneville wanted to move past his criticism of the referees in Wednesday#146;s loss.Quenneville was not fined by the NHL for saying it was tough to watch the work of referees Ghislain Hebert and Tom Kowal in the 2-0 loss to the Kings.#147;It#146;s over and done with,#148; Quenneville said Thursday. #147;I said what I had to say. I think I was a little excited after the game, but it#146;s a new day and I#146;m moving on.#148;Tip-ins: Marcus Kruger is not skating and remains sidelined indefinitely by a concussion. #133; Daniel Carcillo will be in the lineup Friday after missing six games with an upper body injury. #133; Corey Crawford starts his fourth straight game in goal.
