Island Lake officials could extend union deal Thursday

Eighteen Island Lake municipal employees working without a contract since May could get a new deal Thursday night.

Trustees are expected to discuss a memorandum of agreement that would extend the previous deal with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 to April 30, 2012.

The board could vote on the deal the same night.

The proposal has only one change: If layoffs are required among village staff, newer employees will be let go before more senior workers within each department.

Previously, seniority was measured without considering whether an employee worked in the public works, recreation, water or administrative departments, Finance Director John Little said.

If approved, the contract would apply to 14 full-time and four part-time workers, Little said.

Of the full-time staffers:

Ÿ Four work in the water department.

Ÿ Three work in administration.

Ÿ One works in the recreation department.

Ÿ Six work in public works.

Of the part-time staffers:

Ÿ Two work in administration.

Ÿ One works in the water department.

Ÿ One works in the water and public works departments.

The deal was negotiated with union representatives, Trustee Connie Mascillino said.

“I think it was worked out as close to everyone’s satisfaction as it possibly could be,” she said.

The proposal doesn’t call for any pay raises. Employees haven’t received raises since the 2009 fiscal year, officials said.

“Due to the economic times, it’s just not possible for us to give raises and function as a whole,” Mascillino said.

The village board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 3720 Greenleaf Ave.
