Wheeling’s Scarpino inducted into Hall of Fame

Bob Scarpino, counselor at Wheeling High School and basketball coach at Hersey High School, was recently informed of his selection into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame in the “Career Coach” category, as announced by the board of directors of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Chuck Rolinski commented to Scarpino in a letter of acknowledgment, “It is a distinct honor to be enshrined with the other people who have contributed so greatly to Illinois Basketball. Congratulations on your outstanding achievements.”

Scarpino’s first coaching assignment was in 1972 at St. Edward High School in Elgin. In 1977 he assumed coaching responsibilities at Westmont High School until 1985, when he became the coach at Wheeling High School. From 2007 until the present, Scarpino has coached basketball at John Hersey High School.

In his 40 years of coaching, Scarpino has achieved 507 wins, placing him in the top 100 coaches in number of wins in Illinois history. His teams have also won multiple conference and holiday regional championships.

Scarpino will be honored at the 40th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, held at the Illinois State University Union Ballroom in Normal, Ill., on April 28.
