ACT shouldn’t dictate teacher pay

The belief that the teachers at Fenton High School do not deserve their high salaries because of their students’ low ACT scores is completely absurd. The role of a teacher is far more than an educator, but also a support system for their students, and the ACT Test certainly does not regulate that.

Although Fenton High School’s ACT scores rank near the bottom in ACT scores in DuPage County high schools, people need to understand that there are factors that can’t be controlled by the teachers that push scores down. School officials need to realize that ACT scores are not everything. There are students, like myself, who have worked hard throughout their high school years and have received above-average grades, but didn’t do too great on their ACT.

As a matter of fact, teachers who work with students who are struggling academically deserve to get paid even more. It is more challenging and time-consuming to work with struggling students than working with students who are already above average and could probably easily teach themselves.

If teachers are being paid strictly on ACT scores, they can simply just coach students up to do well on their ACT, and nothing else. The idea that one test can determine where a student goes to college is one thing, but the fact it could determine the pay of a teacher is downright ridiculous and unfair.
