Robber flees Wheaton bank with cash

As the statute of limitations was about to expire on the work of the so-called Wheaton Bandit, another bank robbery occurred Monday in Wheaton.

But based on descriptions of Monday's heist, it does not appear the latest robbery was the work of the Wheaton Bandit.

Police say a man robbed a Fifth Third Bank, 1500 N. Main St., about 4 p.m. The man approached a teller, handed over a note demanding money and implied he was armed.

No shots were fired and no gun was displayed. Police said the robber took an undetermined amount of cash and ran north from the scene.

Police responded to an alarm activated by employees at 3:57 p.m. With the assistance of a canine, they searched the area but were unable to find the suspect, according to a news release.

The suspect was described as African American, 19 to 22 years old, and standing about 6 feet or 6 feet, 2 inches tall. He weighed roughly 150 to 175 pounds and wore a black stocking cap, black coat, black pants and dark glasses.

His description did not match that of the Wheaton Bandit, a man suspected in 16 suburban bank robberies between 2002 and 2006 who must be charged by Wednesday to avoid the statute of limitations expiring.

Agents from the FBI are assisting Wheaton police. Anyone with information on Monday's robbery is asked to call Detective James Volpe at (630) 260-2161.
