Man charged with robbing McHenry liquor store

A 47-year-old McHenry man has been charged in connection to an armed robbery at a liquor store Saturday, according to police.

Leroy A. Tatara was spotted throwing a bag into a garbage can a short distance from the Riverside Shop N Go, which was robbed about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

An officer checked the bag and found evidence from the robbery inside, leading to Tatara’s arrest, according to police.

The man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and his face was covered by a scarf when he robbed the store at gunpoint, police said.

Police said Tatara took off on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash before he was spotted tossing the bag into a garbage can.

Tatara was charged with aggravated robbery and theft, which combined carry a sentence of between six and 20 years in prison.

No one was injured during the robbery.

The McHenry County sheriff’s department and Johnsburg Police Department assisted in the investigation.
