Driver charged with DUI after crash with squad car on I-88

A driver has been charged with DUI after veering off the roadway and striking a DuPage County sheriff’s squad car parked on the side of the Reagan Memorial Tollway early Sunday morning, injuring the sheriff’s deputy.

The sheriff’s deputy was changing a flat tire on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-88 in Lisle when the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle and smashed into the side of the squad car, police said.

The deputy was changing the tire on the passenger side of the vehicle and was not struck by the SUV but suffered a broken ankle during the collision, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Matt Hodgdon said.

The crash occurred just east of Route 53 about 4:56 a.m., Hodgdon said.

The driver of the black Chevy Trailblazer was arrested an charged with DUI. Police could not provide the driver’s name Sunday night.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged during the crash, which sent the deputy to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment, police said.
