Stevenson High team places third in math contest
A team of Stevenson High School students finished third in a regional mathematics competition.
The squad had the third-highest score in the second round of the North Suburban Math League. Stevenson finished behind Whitney Young and the Illinois Math and Science Academy.
The league’s 55 schools competed at 11 sites around the Chicago area.
Stevenson finished with 328 points, one ahead of New Trier High School, which it joined for league competition at Deerfield High School. Deerfield, Evanston Township High School and Walter Payton Prep from Chicago also competed at the site.
Stevenson tied for the highest score in three of five competition areas: freshmen, sophomores and orals. In all three areas, the school had perfect scores.
Eugene Bulkin had a perfect score of 50 in the orals competition — believed to be Stevenson’s first perfect score in this area in at least 10 years. He tied for first with a student from Glenbrook North.
Stevenson joined Whitney Young in posting the highest score of any school in the sophomore competition. Stevenson’s contingent scored 75 points, thanks to perfect papers from Raymon Cao, David Chen and Sam Lim.
Also writing perfect papers were sophomore alternates Peter Hwang and Akanksha Shah.
Among freshmen, seven Stevenson students wrote perfect papers. All five designated contestants were perfect: Alex Hong, Jaymo Kang, Timothy Klem, Max Kontorovich and Sergey Papuhin. Diana Kowalski, an alternate, also was perfect.
The junior and senior units also had Top-10 finishes. Justin Doong and Aaron Zalewski wrote perfect papers for the ninth-place juniors, as did alternates Raymon Cao and Mark Zhang.
Vincent Fiorentini had no mistakes for the seniors, who finished 10th.
