10 water mains crack in Schaumburg
Ten water mains broke in Schaumburg between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, causing pressure drops throughout the system, according to village officials.
Construction crews continued to work on the largest crack in the system into the night Monday, a 3-foot-long crack that required crews to dig up and replace an entire section of pipe, said Village Manager Kenneth Fritz.
It remains unclear what caused the breaks, but Fritz said it might have been a malfunction in a pressure release valve in a village water tower.
“They were kind of grouped together between last night and this morning,” he said. “In some cases, water was shut down; in another it was a small leak and the water was still available.”
Most of the breaks were repaired by Monday afternoon, with the exception of the major crack at Commerce Drive at Wilkening Road, just east of Roselle Road.
Fritz said the village opened the malfunctioning pressure valve completely to prevent cracks in additional sections of the pipe. The decision to open the valve caused some residents to experience a drop in water pressure.
Village officials said the water remains safe to drink, and a boil order was never implemented.
