Bartlett routs North Chicago

The Bartlett Hawks girls basketball team made it look easy in the opening game of the annual tip off tournament at Naperville Central.

The Hawks (2-0) rolled to an easy 87-17 win over North Chicago as senior Indiana recruit Haley Videckis lit the fire by canning five 3-pointers in the first quarter.

"I was just really ready to go for today," said Videckis. "The Thanksgiving tournament is always a huge tournament for us, so I want to push myself in every single game. Our team did a really good job of looking up the floor and finding the open player."

"It was a good way to start the game for us," said Bartlett head coach Denise Sarna. "(Videckis) is a good shooter. She was open, and she just hit everything that she shot up there."

Videckis led the team in scoring with 21 points, while senior guard Katie Gutzwiller put up 12 points. Senior forward Lisa Palmer notched 10 points.

The offensive domination by the Hawks continued throughout the entire game. The Bartlett bench alone scored 32 points in the game, and Sarna was happy that the ball always seemed to find a way in.

"The ball went in the basket today," she said. "Everything seemed to fall for us. It was nice to get everybody a chance to get some minutes. I thought the girls did well."

The Hawks went on an incredible 26-0 run to end the third quarter and carry over into the fourth quarter. North Chicago's Tonya Donnelly then put up 4 consecutive points, but Bartlett would have the last word as junior guard Chantel Zasada scored the final basket of the game, giving the Hawks the 87-17 victory.

Playing in such a one-sided affair gave the Hawks the opportunity to fine-tune their game and take a look at things beyond their primary offense, according to Videckis.

"Our fast break is our primary offense, but we really try to look at our secondary offenses," she said. "You can never get enough practice. We tried to look at some new options."
