Scouting St. Francis girls basketball

Last year: 15-14 overall, 8-4 (third) in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue; lost to Montini 74-34 in the Clas 3A St. Francis regional final.

Top players: Kate Slattery, jr., G; Aly Germanos, jr., G; Ellen Hammes, sr., F; Alyssa Fernandez, jr., G; Lexi Riccolo, jr., G.

Scouting report: Phillips said the Spartans haven't set any goals other than "we hope to win more than we lose." It is definitely a season of new beginnings. Phillips, part of the St. Francis coaching staff the last six years, takes over for Jeff Gerdeman on a varsity team that graduated nine seniors. Slattery will be St. Francis' primary ballhandler, and with staunch defenders Germanos and Fernandez makes up a quick set of guards. Hammes, who played some last year, is the Spartans' lone senior. Expect the offense to be more perimeter-oriented without a post presence like graduated Fiona McMahon around. "We're kind of starting from scratch to a certain extent," Phillips said, "but the girls are working hard. It will be interesting to see what we have on the floor."
