Scouting York boys basketball

York

Coach: Tom Kleinschmidt.

Last year: 20-9, 9-3, second in West Suburban Silver; lost 50-28 to De La Salle in Class 4A Oak Park regional final.

Top players: David Cohn, jr., G; Frank Toohey, so., F; Mike Despinich, sr., F; Jake Rzeszutko, sr., G; Justin Kurash, jr., C; Matt DiFrancesa, sr., G; Calvin Brown, jr., F.

Scouting report: In his second year at York, Kleinschmidt takes the reins of the program. He’s a local legend who excelled at Gordon Tech before becoming an All-America at DePaul. Kleinschmidt came to York after a season as a DePaul assistant and a year as the Blue Demons’ director of basketball operations. Even with the graduation of lethal scorer Will Sullivan, the Dukes are poised for a good season. Cohn, a returning starter at point guard, boasts several Division I scholarship offers. Another top player is a sophomore in 6-foot-6 Toohey. While Cohn, Rzeszutko and DiFrancesa cause trouble on the perimeter, Toohey, 6-4 Despinich and 6-7 Kurash have the potential for about 10 points apiece in the post. “We’ve just got to find the right mix out there,” Kleinschmidt said.
