Scouting Wheaton Academy boys basketball
Wheaton Academy
Coach: Paul Ferguson.
Last year: 27-2, 12-0, first in the Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division; lost 68-53 to Crane in a Class 3A Riverside-Brookfield sectional semifinal.
Top players: Gordon Baer, so., F; Cole Fritz, jr., F; Cameron Harvey, sr., G; Wylie Kopp, sr., C; Lars Olson, sr., G; Gabe Partain, jr., G-F; Colin Roy, jr., G-F; Drew Sandburg, sr., G.
Scouting report: Having graduated All-Area players Luke Johnson and Wes Koral, who helped the Warriors to their best record in history (over the prior season’s 24 wins), this is a quicker, more guard-oriented team. Eastern Illinois recruit and combination guard Harvey transferred from St. Joseph to join a backcourt already returning starters in point guard Sandberg and 3-shooter Olson. Inside strength depends on the development of a pair of untested 6-6 players, Baer and the 220-pound Kopp. Ferguson likes the chemistry of this group, which will play a taxing nonconference schedule. To run at the pace Ferguson likes, defense and rebounding have to come around. Wheaton Academy’s shooting eye and athleticism are already there. “We’ll play to those strengths,” Ferguson said.
